Artist Reception will be held on May 19th, 6:00 - 9:00 pm.

What does one experience when in the presence of a terrestrial gartersnake, mountain cottontail, mule deer, wapiti, bee, wasp colony, ladybug, group of aphids, crab spider, black widow, human and other beasts? What is a human’s perception of these animals’ lives? Claire Taylor attempts to answer these questions visually and textually in her exhibition, All of Us Beasts. The show is comprised of paintings, drawings, artist books, and text excerpts from Claire’s Environmental Humanities Master of Science thesis project.

For this project, Claire analyzed her perceptions of the nonhuman animals she met in her daily life. She considered how the presence and behavior of these animals changed her perception of the animal’s species, how this altered her view of herself as a human animal, and what impressions remained with her following each encounter.

Composed of watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil, the paintings offer a venture into other worlds and Claire’s interpretation of these realms. Much of the research for this project took place during Claire’s frequent hikes and bike rides in the Red Butte Research Natural Area, for which she was granted access, as well as the surrounding foothills and urban areas.

Funding for this research has been provided in part by the Global Change and Sustainability Center, and the Friends of Red Butte Creek at the University of Utah.

ill be an exhibition of the artwork I created for this book and excerpts of my writing.
